Have you recently had dentures fitted? If so, it’s important to know how to properly care for them. In this post, we’ll go through our top tips for looking after your new false teeth and helping them last, from recommendations on how and when to clean them, to things to avoid and key things to remember.

Tip 1 – When to clean

We recommend rinsing your dentures after eating. This is because food particles can get stuck between the teeth. You’ll need to remove them before cleaning, and make sure you handle them with care, as they may break if dropped, and the clips are delicate. You’ll also need to factor other cleaning into your routine – read on for more on this.

Tip 2 – How to clean

As well as brushing your dentures twice daily, like you would your natural teeth, you’ll also need to soak them in a special solution, best done overnight. If they aren’t soaked properly, they may lose their shape, so it’s important they’re kept moist. Ensure you rinse them before putting them back in your mouth, to get rid of any remaining solution.

Tip 3 – Avoid harsh products

Using bleaches and even whitening toothpastes can weaken and discolour your dentures. It’s also best to avoid harsh cleaning chemicals, as these can be too abrasive. Ensure that when you clean your dentures, you avoid hot/boiling water, as this can warp your false teeth permanently.

Tip 4 – Remember your mouth

While this tip isn’t strictly about your dentures, it can help them fit comfortably. Brush any remaining teeth, and use a soft brush to clean your tongue, cheeks and palate.

Tip 5 – Have regular check-ups

Visiting your dentist regularly is a great way to stay on top of your oral health and check for any changes, as well as giving your mouth and dentures a thorough clean. It can also help check that your false teeth are fitting properly, preventing irritation and infection.
