You might think because milk teeth fall out and are replaced by adult teeth that their dental care isn’t vitally important. In fact, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Children’s dental care is so important to learning valuable life lessons, preventing health issues, and ensuring an easy transition into growing up.

Children’s dental care is a lesson learnt for life

Introducing your children to the importance of brushing your teeth, not eating too much sugar, and why you should visit the dentist is essential to helping them develop lessons they’ll use for life. Instilling the importance of brushing morning and night is essential to do from a young age, and you can even make brushing fun with colourful children’s products. Teaching your children the essentials of dental care will help them form a routine that they will continue to use as they grow older, teaching them important hygiene habits and helping to maintain their smiles long past their infancy.

Health problems in children’s teeth

Even though milk teeth do fall out, ensuring the ensuing adult teeth enter a healthy and supportive mouth is essential. Cavities, inflamed gums, and the need for fillings could all indicate to your children’s dentist that your children aren’t using the correct hygiene methods at home. Not only are these health problems uncomfortable and a little intimidating for young children, but they also show that they may not take the care they should with their developing adult teeth. Public Health England (PHE) shared scary statistics that show 141 children are admitted to hospital a day to have rotten teeth removed because of sugar consumption and lack of teeth cleaning. This is why it’s important to teach children the importance of dental health from a young age – because these lessons should be learnt for life.

Children’s dental care in easy steps

  • When they are babies and begin growing their first teeth, brush them for them twice a day. When they are old enough, show them how to do it themselves and brush yours with them to show them this is the right thing to do.
  • Use children’s toothpaste that includes fluoride. This naturally helps to strengthen children’s teeth against cavities and decay. It is a naturally occurring mineral found in drinking water and is entirely safe.
  • Make sure your children maintain a healthy diet. Not too much sugar or sugary drinks like fizzy pop and sodas, as these are some of the main culprits for children’s cavities.
  • Book your child’s first dentist appointment as soon as they get their first tooth as a baby. We can advise on dental care during this period and will of course welcome you back to the dental practice whenever you need.
  • Have regular check-ups with your child’s dentist to ensure the continuation of their dental health. Your child’s dentist will take note of any changes, give advice, help to spot any early warning signs so that you both may act accordingly.
