Tips and Tricks For New Denture Wearers
If you’ve lost a tooth or multiple teeth, dentures are the perfect solution. They provide you with effective replacement teeth to help you eat with ease, speak clearly and smile with confidence. Here at the Viva Dental practice in Lancaster, our team of talented dental surgeons are experts in providing dentures that are comfortable to wear, won’t shift around in your mouth and will work efficiently.
How do dentures work?
We can either bond or clasp the dentures to neighbouring teeth, or supply you with the next best thing to a permanent, natural tooth; a dental implant. This device looks and feels just like a natural tooth once your gum has healed from the procedure. It consists of a titanium root, that is placed in your jaw, with a crown fitted to the top.
To help you decide which sort of dentures will best suit your habits, budget and lifestyle, it’s a good idea to book a consultation with one of our skilled Lancaster dentists. They’ll be able to advise you on the ins and outs of each denture option, with a view to helping you make an informed choice. In the meantime, your dentures, whichever style you choose, will take some getting used to.
Tips and tricks for new denture wearers
Your gums may be sore initially. Soft foods are recommended. You can gradually add more texture to your diet, as you get used to your dentures.
1. Increased salivation is normal while your dentures settle. Don’t be disconcerted by this
2. Sore spots in the mouth caused by new dentures can be relieved if you gargle warm salted water.
3. Many denture wearers have reported that it took approximately one month to get used to the dentures, because they had to learn how to speak and eat whilst wearing them. Be patient.
4. Using denture adhesive is a great way to keep removable dentures in place.
5. You’ll find that it’s very easy to dislodge the lower dentures by pushing them with your tongue. You need to try not to do this.
6. Dentures must be kept clean, so they must be brushed along with any remaining natural teeth. Using an interdental toothbrush may be the easiest way to do this effectively.
7. Specialist bridge and implant floss can help you with the denture cleaning process.
8. Immediately after having had implants fitted, do not touch the surgical area with your hands as this can increase the risk of infection.
9. Also be careful not to knock your cheek or drink hot drinks until after the local anaesthetic has worn off completely.
