Committing to any cosmetic treatment can seem like a big step. Our team of expert dentists hope to make the process simple, easy and, of course, safe – and that starts with talking through every element of the procedure.

In this post, our dentists in Lancaster talk through teeth whitening, the lightening treatment that can help elevate your smile and restore its brilliance.

What is teeth whitening?

It’s a cosmetic treatment that brightens your smile and can lift away stains. It effectively ‘bleaches’ the teeth, but without damaging the precious enamel. Our patients cite how easy and affordable the treatment is as key reasons to try it.

Why have teeth whitening been carried out?

From heavy smoker’s stains to a dull or aged-looking smile, our patients request teeth whitening for a number of reasons. Whatever the reason, our patients agree that the results give them an enhanced smile while boosting their confidence.

What are the laws around teeth whitening?

UK law states that only registered dental professionals, such as our dental team, can carry out the treatment. That’s why it’s worth doing your research when choosing a clinic or dental practice for your treatment.

What treatment do you offer?

We offer a home teeth whitening kit, as well as deeper bleaching offered in surgery. We’ll suggest the appropriate one to you, based on your unique needs. Please bear in mind that our home teeth whitening kits can’t simply be ‘ordered’. It’s a treatment process and will involve a consultation.

What about high street kits?

Off-the-shelf, high street kits aren’t as effective at whitening your teeth, because the whitening agent is at a lower concentration than a product available from a clinic or dental practice. In other words, you might be disappointed by your results!

Does teeth whitening make your teeth sensitive?

In some cases, a passing sensitivity can occur. However, sensitive toothpaste can help manage this until it clears up. If you have, or have had, sensitivity in the past – and feel concerned about teeth whitening – we’re happy to talk you through ways of managing this.

How long do results last?

Results last in the long-term with the right oral health care and regular dental check-ups. A top-up, as recommended by your dentist, can also help to prolong your results.

How do I book a treatment?

Just get in touch with our dentists and we’ll book a consultation at our Lancaster dental practice. We’ll take the time to talk through your options, risks and benefits, so you know exactly what to expect on the day of your treatment. You can find all the details on our contact page here.
