Here at Viva, our Lancaster dentists want to help you get the most out of your smile and enjoy healthy teeth, gums and mouth for life. That’s why we’re sharing some top tips for caring for your dentures, split into ‘dos’ and ‘don’t’s. Read on to find out more..

DO:

DO clean them correctly – warm tap water is enough to dislodge food particles and freshen them up
again. Make sure you clean after eating and before bed! Any time you use a cleaning solution, make sure you rinse your dentures thoroughly afterwards. You can also clean with a soft-bristled brush.

DO soak overnight – not only will your dentures need a deeper clean once a day, but you also need to give the mouth time to recover from daily wear. If you’d rather sleep with them in, take a break during the day (remove them for at least 6 hours). Ensure you soak them in proper denture solution and don’t use harsh soaps, abrasives or other chemicals to clean them.

DO practise good oral care – as well as your dentures, you’ll need to keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy, too. If you still have some of your teeth, ensure these are cleaned and flossed as well. Finally, schedule regular check-ups for a professional clean and assessment.

DON’T:

DON’T use boiling water – these could warp and damage your dentures. Warm water is ideal!

DON’T bite too hard – when eating, it can be tempting to bite down hard on foods or to have large bites. Both of these could cause breakages and chipping of the dentures. Many people with dentures do have to adjust their diets – no more boiled sweets, for example – to ensure their false teeth stay strong.

DON’T avoid check-ups – this is relevant both for a routine clean or an appointment to check a problem with your dentures (such as a change in shape, or if they become cracked or are more slippery in your mouth). You’ll need to see your dentist throughout your life, so don’t assume that false teeth mean it’s no longer important!
