Dos & Don’ts Of Dentures
Do you currently wear dentures? Are you planning on having dentures in the future? Or are you simply seeking advice for a friend or family member? Whatever your situation, our expert dentists – who proudly serve the Lancaster area – are on hand to help. Read on to find out some common dos and don’ts involved with this common and effective dental treatment.
Do: Prioritise your oral care routine
Whether you’ve got one set of dentures or two, you’ll need to care for them in the same great way you’d look after your natural smile. Think brushing with a special denture brush; soaking overnight; using appropriate cleaners; and so on. What’s more, you’ll need to keep on top of your remaining teeth with twice-daily cleaning (toothbrush and flossing).
Don’t: Forget to wear your dentures
It might sound silly, but we all forget things now and then. But not wearing your dentures – and worse, leaving them out to dry – could cause them to bend, warp and twist, meaning they don’t fit your mouth properly anymore and could even cause pain, discomfort and dental concerns.
Do: Visit your dentist regularly
Even if you’ve got both sets of teeth replaced with dentures, you’ll still need to see your dentist for regular check-ups. That’s because dentists do more than clean your smile or check your teeth. They also look for signs of gum disease, oral cancer and infection that could cause harm to your health.
Don’t: Smoke
Smoking can lead to gum and jaw bone recession, which in turn could cause further tooth loss. And, this might not just be limited to cigarettes and cigars, but also to vapes and e-cigarette devices. With dentures, smoking might also stain and discolour them – just like the smoke does to your natural teeth.
Do: Check the fit of your dentures
Are your dentures loose? Do they click in your mouth or slip when you speak or eat? Believe it or not, our gums and bones change over time and especially with age, which means the fit of your dentures could be affected. Without a dentist’s help, you could be faced with sores in the mouth, pain, or a burning sensation when chewing or talking. If you’re unsure about whether your dentures are fitting well, talk to an expert.
